MINISTRIES

Where strangers become family

Newest Ministry

Our newest ministry is our involvement in SAWs, Servants At Work, Inc. This is a faith-based nonprofit organization that builds access ramps for people with disabilities in low-income households. Parishioners, Sonny Carter and Dan Bullard and other volunteers, participated in their first build in June of 2022 and have constructed twenty-four ramps in Henry County as of December 2023.

Thanksgiving & Christmas Food Baskets

Coordinator: Karen Shields

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas we work with Westminster Center to provide a complete holiday dinner for 10 families in the New Castle area.  Members of the church donate enough food for the holiday meal and additional meals for the week. For the 2021 baskets we are adding a St. James Favorite Easy Recipes booklet along with the ingredients in the basket.

Victory Lane Camp

Coordinator: Pat Carter

We first participated in a new ministry at the Cornerstone Campground in 2015. We served lunch to 100 campers at the Victory Lane Camp. The Victory Lane Camp is a week long summer camp for physically/mentally handicapped children and their families. In 2016 we served hot dogs and sides, in 2017 and 2018 we served a pizza dinner and had an ice cream social for 125 campers. The camp has grown and in 2019 we had a Mexican Fiesta for 140 campers. Back in session for 2021! We served 114 campers pizza, salad, applesauce, cupcakes, and drinks.

The Order of Daughters of the King

The Order of the Daughters of the King is an order for women who are communicants (members) of the Episcopal Church. The Daughters pledge to a lifelong program of prayer, service, and evangelism. Support is given by a world-wide community of like-minded women.

The Vision statement is:

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King is to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others, and to become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.

The Motto of the Order is:

For His Sake…

I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do.
Lord, what will you have me do?

The Order at St. James is the first Chapter in the Diocese of Indianapolis. It is the Saint Clare Chapter of Saint James Episcopal Church, Chapter number 2631. The Daughters were received into the community on January 8, 1992. Each Daughter is given a silver Greek cross, the emblem of the Order, which is worn at all times. The Latin words “Magnanimiter Crucem Sustine” are inscribed on it. The English translation is, “with heart, mind, and spirit, uphold and bare the cross”.

The Daughters pray for the needs of our members, community, and the world. They provide bereavement dinners and have annual prayer retreats open to all.

Annual Peace Walk

September 21

We celebrate the International Day of Peace in conjunction with other local churches. This program began in 2015 with The First Friends Meeting and has grown each year, adding more churches. We have met at Baker Park and at The First Friends Meeting. We have a simple meal together, make signs, have a speaker, sing “Let There be Peace on Earth” with a short service, and then walk around the park/neighborhood as a group to promote world peace in our corner of the world.

Community-wide Projects

We participate in the community-wide school supply drive. We gather pencils, pens, crayons, paper, scissors, backpacks, and other school supplies that are given to local school children. We also collect underwear and socks to give to elementary school nurses to give to students in need. Our collection for 2022 is toothbrushes to give to all the children at the back to school event.

Raintree Square

Coordinator: Cynthia Bullard

In this ministry we provide a Sunday service on the first Sunday of the month at Raintree Square Retirement Community Apartments. We have an adapted Morning Prayer service with lots of hymns! After the service we visit with the residents for a short time. We hope to expand this to other independent living and nursing homes.
